As we reach the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, our schools have been immersing students in the culture and history of Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, and learning about the many contributions of Hispanic and Latin people. Last week, the student experience was front and center in Hispanic Heritage Month school celebrations at Richard J. Bailey and Woodlands Middle High School, and a beautiful showcase of talent, pride, and a love for all things connected to Hispanic culture.
RJB students kicked off their celebration in the newly restored auditorium with a flag parade, followed by students performing a mini-play, cultural dances, and a student-led presentation of the special collaborative art project inspired by artist Frida Khalo. The students weren’t the only ones who shared in the richness and connection to Hispanic culture, Ms. Ghigliotty took to the microphone and delivered a beautiful rendition of ‘Mi Terra’ (My Homeland) by Cuban- American recording artist Gloria Estefan. An interactive Hispanic Heritage trivia game led by RJB spanish teacher Mr. Farah- also the organizer of the celebration - capped off the spirited assembly. “Eres muy talentoso!” Mr. Farah declared.
With the stewardship of the spirited Ms. Stellato, WMHS Spanish teacher, Woodlands students also shined on stage in their celebration of Hispanic Heritage. The program included student musical performances and choreographed dances that displayed country flags and traditional dresses. Part of the program was devoted to a student-led trivia session that highlighted significant history-making Hispanic figures, food, art, and other significant cultural contributions.
